ALTON — Sometimes, all it takes is an extra step to get started in the right direction, which Oasis Women’s Center plans to implement after the Shoes to Succeed inaugural event.

Event toWomens Footw,Rotary of the Riverbend and the Jacoby Arts Center partnered this year to bring the first-of-its-kind event during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to benefit Oasis Women’s Center, an Alton shelter for battered women, to acquire new shoes for women re-entering the work force and a life of non-violence toward them.

I believe this event will provide Oasis with an additional way to help women, said Margarette Trushel, executive director of the center, which also serves abused men.

Trushel said the center helps women look for work and shelter. She said the women do not have extra money to purchase shoes, and when they do have extra money, they typically spend it on their children.

I think it’s an opportunity to help them get a fresh start, she said.

The affordable, shionable Shoes to Succeed event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Jacoby Arts Center, 627 E. Broadway in Alton. The event will help raise money to buy new shoes for women. With Shoes to Succeed admission of only $12,Buy Ugg Boots Cheap almost anyone can attend the cocktail attire required event for a girls’ night out, to which men also are invited. There will be a cash bar and entertainment by musical duo Ralph Butler and Gigi Darr, of the Ralph Butler Trio, which plays regularly at The Tenderloin Room in St. Louis.

Saks Fifth Avenue St. Louis, at 1 Plaza Frontenac, is donating a pair of boots from its exclusive ll shoe collection, the value not to exceed $500, for the Shoes to Succeed raffle. The boot raffle winner, and winners of gift basket raffle items, will be announced at the end of the night, and the winners must be present to win.

Raffle tickets will vary in price from $1 to $20.

Also at the event, guests will receive a stamp on their ticket enabling them to come and go, but as they are leaving at the end of the night, they will receive a Shoe-wag bag full of goodies.

Rotary of the Riverbend President Mark Anderson said he likes the idea of the event.

It’s an opportunity for the men in Rotary to show support for battered women and the women of Rotary, said Anderson, who will don a tuxedo and serve complimentary hors d’oeuvres, along with other male Rotary volunteers.

Trushel said the types of shoes that women who are assisted at the shelter would get depend on where a woman goes to work.

It’s special in that the women will receive a new pair of shoes Handbags Store, but they will get to pick them out themselves, Trushel said. Many of the women who come to the shelter arrive in old tennis shoes and flip-flops.

Both Trushel and Anderson said that Cynthia M. Ellis, editor of The Telegraph publication’s flaire magazine and a Rotary of the Riverbend charter member, is the one who came up with the idea for the event, which the Rotary of the Riverbend took on as a service project.

I’ve wanted to do a fund-raising event for Oasis for the past several years, and I talked with Margarette about it, Ellis said. She liked the idea. It took awhile to finally organize it, and I couldn’t do it alone.

Ellis gave credit to a lot of women from the community who stepped up to help out.

Without their help, I don’t think this would have happened, she said. I’m overwhelmed by their generosity to help such a great cause.

She said the event combines two things she enjoys — fund-raising and footwear.

I’m a girl who loves shoes, and I’ve got so many girlfriends who do too, she explained. I feel this is the perfect event that mixes them both. It’s going to be a night of fun.Womens Footwear
